The International Academy of Image Arts and Sciences is a non-profit institution, established in 1991 by Gabriel Lucci with the support of a group of artists and expert professionals in the cinema and audiovisual communication industry.
The project was brought forward by the L'Aquila Film Institute, “La Lanterna Magica", which has always closely examined the progress of audiovisual and film language. In 1992 the Institute established ties with the University of L’Aquila in order to set up the Academy. In 1993 the first courses began with a series workshops and short courses and the annual courses began operating in 1995.
The Academy has been officially recognised by the Abruzzo Region with legislation passed in May 1995 (L.R. n. 97), and subsequently in 1996 (L.R. 87) and in September 1997 (L.R. n. 100) identifying the Academy as a centre of excellence in the field of Higher Education and training for the audiovisual industry. This role is considered in both a Mediterranean and European context. The provincial government and the local town council are both represented on the board of administration of the Academy.
The president of the Academy is Massimo Cialente. He presides over a range of activities involving teaching, research & development, publishing (with the book series on cinema) as well as the management of Cinema “Massimo” (a completely restored art deco cinema that screens quality films). The Academy is also actively involved in audiovisual productions of high calibre which explore the language and potential of image arts.
The combination of all these areas, including the Abruzzo Film Commission and the L'Aquila Film Institute, place the Academy in a unique position from which to probe the world of the moving image and to excel as a research centre for image arts and sciences.
