The Founder

Gabriele Lucci started his professional training at an early age by attending the school of Dramatic Art in his town, L’Aquila.

In 1976 Gabriele Lucci established “Primo Piano”, the first film club in the Abruzzo region, with a group of friends. After graduating with a degree in economics with a thesis on “Regions and Radio Television”, he established the L'Aquila Film Institute, "La Lanterna Magica" (a non-profit organisation) and was the Artistic Director until 2000. He is currently the Honorary President. Together with the L’Aquila Film Institute he created and set up various initiatives many of which are of international importance; "A City in Cinema" - an international festival on film art and technique, international conferences on audiovisual language and high definition, and the Nestor Almendros award for young and emerging directors of photography. He has organised various international workshops run by renowned experts such as John Bailey, Garret Brown (Oscar winner and inventor of the Steadycam) and Jim Morris (“Pixar” producer and former “ILM” senior executive).

During the late 1980s, working in conjunction with audiovisual communication industry professionals, he worked towards establishing the International Academy of Image Arts and Sciences. The Academy offers university level courses and provides highly specialised training in film and new media. The school began offering courses in 1993. Gabriele Lucci has fostered direct links with the film industry on a national and international level enabling the Academy to build a reputation as an international school. In 2000 he promoted the establishment of the L'Aquila Film Library, which now has over 1,500 titles in its collection, as well as the establishment of the Abruzzo Film Commission. A great deal of his work has been reported in newspapers and television world-wide; "Le Monde", "La Repubblica", "The Guardian", "Il Corriere della Sera", "Variety", "La Stampa", "Suddeutsche Zeitung", "Il Sole 24 Ore", the RAI (Italian radio and television broadcasting network) and Mediaset.

He has run courses and university seminars on cinema and has published numerous articles.

In December 2003 he was appointed chief editor for a book series on cinema by the publishing house Mondadori Electa.

He worked in conjunction with the publishing house Mondadori Electa to produce a three volume series called “Storaro – Writing with Light”, followed by the book “Ferretti - The Art of Production Design” which was part of the book series called “Protagonists of Cinema”. This book was well received by readers and critics and was presented at the Venice Film Festival, in the House of Cinema in Roma, at the University of Los Angeles (UCLA) and at the Guggenheim Museum of New York in March 2005,.
In 2005 he produced two books on cinema for the weekly magazine: “Panorama” as  part of a collection called "Great Contemporary Artists".

Since September 2005 he has edited the book series: “Dictionaries of Cinema” for Electa with the following publications;  “Westerns”, “Animation” “Musicals”, “Noir” “Science fiction” and “Fantasy”.

In 2007 he will publish a book dedicated to the work of Ennio Morricone.
